Level 1, 7922 course
The City & Guilds Level 1 Embroidery course is an ideal undertaking for either those completely new to the craft, or maybe have produced one or two small pieces and are keen to learn more. It is also a good 'jumping of' point for those who are cross- stitchers and now wish to broaden their embroidery horizons.
The modules are easy to follow and offer a range of techniques that on completion mean the student may carry on developing alone or be ready to tackle the level 2 or 3 courses.
A wide range of stitches are explored both textural and counted, you will also do a little colouring on fabric to produce a stitched land or seascape. A more traditional sampler will also be designed and stitched, as well as the opportunity to make several small items.
In the three modules Chris leads you gently by the hand, with easy to understand lessons, that always culminate with a new technique you will have perfected. As this is a beginners level, no assumptions will have been made of your abilities, only that you are keen to learn and 'have a go'.
Method: The candidate will complete and supply for assessment
a. A portfolio of embroidery samples as listed in the syllabus b. Folder of essential notes including relevant Health & Safety advice Each module is split into lessons, with each lesson consisting of notes, photographs and where required step by step instructions. Included with each module is a question and answer sheet as well as a check list, this ensures that students have completed all of the work within the module prior to it being returned for assessment.
Being a distance learning scheme students are able to communicate with the centre via post, e-mail and telephone, or if possible visit Wales and one of our regular workshops.
Module 1- colour and how to use it, collages, interlocking and textural stitches, building the stitches into a sea or landscape, working to scale.
Module 2- work on line, counted thread techniques, historical links, small pieces to illustrate the stitch skills, making cards, pin cushions, lavender bags and keep sakes.
Module 3- texture, isolated stitches, building a sampler, traditional verses modern, designing your personal piece.
This course was originally titled 'first steps' and this neatly describes the course. Ideal for those who are either new to embroidery or perhaps are making the transfer from cross stitch.
Payment Options
Option 1: Pay £90 for the first module, work through it and pay for the next module when you submit module 1 for assessment, all subsequent modules are paid for in this way. Option 2: To make a saving of 10% you may purchase all 3 modules of a level 3 course making a single payment of £243. This saves you £27. Option 3: For the same 10% discount you may purchase the first 4 modules of either the level 2 or level 3 courses making a single payment of £324, this saves you £36.

Level 3, 7922 course
The City & Guilds Level 3 Embroidery course, is the ultimate aim for all enthusiastic embroiderers.Encompassing as it does a vast range of techniques from the traditional to the more modern approaches.
Embroidery is addressed from different countries, and samples produced. Historical styles are also looked at, and the student is encouraged to research and study.
Machine embroidery is touched upon as is appliqué and a small amount of piecing fabrics. The design units that run along side the practical can be viewed as the equivalent as a foundation art certificate.

Module 1- colour and making it work for you, interlocking stitches, fabric painting, getting inspiration from the landscape.
Module 2- texture and its uses, blockprinting, collage techniques, silk painting with texture in mind. Whole cloth quilting, trapunto, Italian quilting, small hanging or cushion in silk quilted to your own choice.
Module 3- line into pattern, learning how to draw to help you design, weaving sample, development of cloth book, satin and long and short stitch. Media images and how to create them.
Module 4- geometric and organic shapes, research project into a culture known for geometric representations. Positive and negative designs. Counted thread techniques, cross-stitch and its peasant history, blackwork, Hardanger, pulled thread, drawn thread, creating a traditional sampler.
Module 5- form, paper manipulations, appliqué, bias form taken into Celtic work, Baltimore appliqué, Hawaiian work, Broderie Perse, San Blas or Mola work, microwave dyeing, cut back appliqué.
Module 6- the use of contrast, drawing figures and faces, working on proportion, work taken from the Bayeux tapestry, modern figure worked in Bayeux stitch. Stumpwork figure, abstraction of the human form, project on well-known embroiderer who uses the human figure as their inspiration. Human figure in atechnique of your own choosing.
Module 7- new materials free machine techniques, tyvek, softsculp, burning and manipulating, exploring other new fabrics. Smocking, pleating, faux chenille, prairie points, edges, paper piecing patchwork, Japanese folded, making cords. Three experimental samples. First assessment piece.
Module 8- embellishments, sequins, beads, buttons, shisha, securing samples, Dorset buttons, zips, haberdashery, inspirational pieces, Second assessment piece.
Module 9- papermaking, pyrographs and braiders, making fabric covered books and files, third assessment piece.
Module 10- working from historical costume, looking at fans, gloves, masks, cuffs and ornament, forth and last assessment piece created for a fictional character.
